HOTEL GARNI SCHLOSSBLICK
L. Kubena, reservations

So, this means you can have a White Xmas, of sorts.

Jordie can have his snow boarding day, we all can have a sleigh ride and all we have to do is to book it for you, so let the journey begin!
Say it commences 7th Dec at this point...
You have 303 days left to go from to-day, 5th Feb, 2012 before departure!
That equates to just over 43 weeks...
Saving $100 a week will give the required $4000 you will need, without the extra 10-20% for blowout expenses.

I will try and keep it at bare bones.
If you get the biz happening before, which you should do at least 3 local weddings prior to departure, you must save any of those earnings apart from the $100 a week necessary to save.

This is to be seen as a recon mission for a business that will demand you visit new wedding venues in UK and Europe at least annually.

As this will be a bare bones trip, all you need to accomplish this trip is the very important the lay of the land!

That is...
  • gain a perspective of what is available,
  • how it operates over there
  • the culture of each area
  • Food choices and availability
  • Distances
  • Costs/options
  • Transport facilities
  • Venue destinations
  • clear up your supply details and what each venue supplies
  • where Europe is in relation to UK
  • Check out specials available for honeymoons over there as compared to what is offered here for over there...eg...http://www.neilson.co.uk/ski  Check out those specials...Makes you sick with desire!!!

So, while it is tempting to do all that is on offer in each area, it must remain a full on fair dinkum business trip with 2 days out for personal stuff only, for tax purposes. Even that is dubious as I think lots of people would benefit from the research gained, especially for Xmas in the Snow.

Ok...so that will be it for a week.
Save your first $100 nowPut it into a Heritage Xmas account that you can't touch for 6 months.

I have done all I can now.
  • Have arranged with Elaine to meet her in Ireland
  • Will arrange with Richard to meet him in Vienna
  • Arrange with Gary to meet him just under Leeds Castle
  • This new lady Jill, we will see where that goes.

There are a lot of folk I can hook up with over there who have local area knowledge in UK, so I need to know some more Castle destinations/names.
Pop the Castle names in the comment box here, so I can keep tabs of what goes with what and I'll check them out and rate them as viable options or not, this time around.

I am assuming you are all systems go, so I will book the Hotel above for 2 nights that suit the schedule.

Please bear in mind, this will be a full on expedition.
At least 5 kms of walking daily, as we scramble from buses to Hostels, back again to buses, to Castles, to trains, to car hire places.
We will not take cabs at all.
Too expensive...
So, get fit!

A Place in the Snow...
.
Place your Castles and requests in the comments box below please, so I can keep everything together!

Draft 2...

Remember this is a blog & it updates backwards! Go to the bottom and find the first post if you want to get the gist of this in sequence...
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Ok, so after a check on what client wants, the list can now begin to take on a different shape.

Car hire in Edinburgh, Inverness, Dublin, Galway, Wales and England/London is a viable option, considering the cost will be split 3 or 4 ways (4 ways, if we can get an extra tourist to accompany us).
Altering the agenda, now to look like this...

Days/Nights... Due to dates not yet being fixed, Xmas & NY Days/Nights will be a mystery area pro-temp! Remember, most stuff will be closed & services reduced on those Days and extra fees imposed on certain accom on certain days etc, so we must be flexible until airline bookings paid for by Oct at latest and then tidy up and begin to book other things, based around our Xmas bookings, especially meetings with Castle crews etc in Europe. Europe will be last area to visit, as it begins to snow in late Dec & if want a White Xmas, the French/German/Austraian Alps area, (Lower Bavaria) is about the only area just then that will be more likely to have good snow.

Day...
  1. Leave Aust ...(eg on 2pm on 7th.)..Night on Plane  from Bangkok to London

This is a map of German Castles I found for you in Lower Bavaria. I think it was in the Castle at Neuschwenstein...

After that interlude, found some more info on a White Xmas in Bavaria...
Quote from a tourist...."Dont do the organized tours, which are a rip off. You are basically paying for someone to escort you on the train there and the tour at the actual castle is only given by castle employees.

Get a ticket to Fussen. You can buy the Bayern Ticket to Fussen and it is good for up to 5 people I beleive for roundtrip for the same day. I want to say it is 29 Euros, but that was last summer so it may be a bit more now. Its about 1 hour 45 minutes there. Once you get to the cute little fussen train station, walk through it and out front and there will be busses that will take you on the few minute bus ride to the base of the castle. I cant remember if the Bayern ticket covered the bus ride, I want to say no, but the cost wasnt too much, a few Euros maybe.

You will most likely have to wait in line for the tickets, and they are given for a very specific time, you expect some time to walk around the the little town around the ticket office. The tickets were about 12 Euros. If you walk down by the lake it there are amazing views and spectacular photo ops. To get up to the castle itself, there it a steep, uphill walk. There is the option of buying another ticket for a bus to take you up the hill, although there is still another walk after that, but it is mainly down hill to the castle. The bus up the hill is something like 4 Euros roundtrip. It saves about 30 minutes of extra walking. The bus gets extremely cramped, so get in line early and expect an uncomfortable ride, but it is short. The whole trip, bus up the hill the walk to the castle, takes about 30-40 minutes. Give plenty of time to get to the castle, because they are very strict with making your time, and if you miss it you will have to go back down to the ticket office and hope they have any tours that day left.

The tour is alright, but you have to endure it to get inside, as taking an organized tour is the only way. It of course ends in the over prices gift shop. One of the more interesting things to see at this location is the bridge over the waterfall. When you take the bus up the hill, you will be let off at a stop among trees. You can read the signs, the path to the castle is to the left, the bridge (I think is is the Maria Bridge) is to the right. It is a think, but stable, bridge over a narrow valley with a waterfall below it. There is an amazing view of the castle from on it, with my favorite, another great photo op. There is no fee to go onto the bridge. If you have some more time in the area the day you are there, there are hiking paths all over around the castle, including one down to the waterfall and lagoon below the bridge.

This is an interesting site to go see and one of those things you have to do when you are in Bavaria.

European Christmas Markets always promise something the Germanic locals call ‘gemuchlichkeit’. There is no single word that appears in English that translates this word. It really means good feeling and ambience… a kind of personal glow and warmth. Christmas markets are a heady mixture of sights, sounds, smells, tactile stimulation and they are so nostalgic.

This morning we have included a local guide for a tour through this
fascinating city from the Hradcany – Prague Castle to St Vitus
Cathedral. Entrances are included. Prague Castle covers over 7 hectares
and is the largest ancient castle in the world.
    We also visit Zlatá Ulièka
(the Golden Lane) with its tiny colourful houses built right into the
arches of the Castlewalls and named after the goldsmithswho lived here
in the 17th century. The whole afternoon and evening is free to explore
the laneways, churches and bridges of this beautiful city. Prague is the
city of ‘good KingWenceslas’ so naturally the best Christmas markets are
in Wenceslas Square and the Old Town. Time to sip medovina – a
    warm honey liquor. (B)

      To Start the Ball Rolling!

Remember this is a blog & it updates backwards! Go to the bottom and find the first post if you want to get the gist of this in sequence...

This is a diary of how to set up a trip for someone going to UK & Europe for Business on a Budget for a recon mission.
      Here we go...
      I allowed $1.60 Conv for BPound...it's $1.46 today...AU$D
      $1.30 for Euro...it's $1.27 today...AU$D

So, all is within budget, thus far.

It's Castles out of town that will bust the budget.
You could delete a lot and stay put in Edinburgh in a cheap hostel for a week to save dollars, then go on with just visiting 10 major Castles you want for Weddings inside.
I have given Castles inside, Grounds outside, romantic backdrops, great places close by for honeymoons, even a few Palaces thrown in for sheer beauty.
A very wide range of venues indeed...

This is part of that blog from that USA girl...
...”Opera Garnier is also beautiful to see. At Christmas, the markets are fun and the shops are decorated, so you get lots to see just being on the streets.

Many will disagree with me, but I am less a fan of the Louvre. There is lots to see, but you really need to do your homework to find what you are interested. The paintings there are just less appealing to me, as many of them are more religious scenes and I am a fan of Impressionism (hence, the preference for D'Orsay). I do enjoy the Greek/Egyptian antiquities at the Louvre. It is a massive place and can be very crowded, so consider going during the late evening hours (Wednesday evening, I think). It is closed on Tuesday.

I do like the Paris Museum Pass...buy it when you get there (no need to get it ahead of time). It does need to be used on consecutive days and there is a 2, 4 or 6 day version. It's not really a money saver, but it is a time saver, to me. Less waiting in line (pass holders can usually skip waiting lines). parismuseumpass.com There is a list on the site of which museums and monuments accept the pass. Make sure you know where you want to go and what days/hours are for the things you want to do...mistake that many make in Paris!!

Make sure you take small travel umbrellas and good scarves and hats to stay warm. We wore thin layers under our clothes from REI that kept us warm without bulk. I also like the little air activated hand warmers (like you would wear in gloves at a football stadium or for hunters). Great if you find your self outdoors longer than you expected. They stay warm all day.

Have you decided which arrondisement you are going to stay in? Hotel or apartment?

Consider taking the train in from CDG instead of a shuttle or taxi...less expensive and can be faster when traffic is bad.

Use carnets of tickets for the Metro and buses. Choose a location to stay in with a Metro station or a good bus line near by. Use ATMs to get Euros while you are there (notify banks ahead of time regarding your travel plans).

If you can afford it, splurge on a remarkable meal on Christmas Day. I would recommend Les Ambassadeurs for brunch but I think the hotel has been bought and is scheduled to be closed for renovations. We went to Le Cinq last year for Christmas Day lunch (at the Four Seasons)...it was very luxurious and not inexpensive but we enjoyed it. Things do shut down quite a bit on Christmas Eve in the late afternoon. They come back to life after lunch on Christmas Day. The Metro does run though.

If you are considering Strasbourg or Paris, those are definitely the two cities to consider, assuming that you want to experience Christmas in a big city with restaurants and activities. I would throw in Lille as an alternative idea, in case the proximity of England and Belgium appeal to you for some quick border crossings.
If you go to Paris, Strasbourg does have a beautiful Christmas market and I think you could go for a day. Someone did that in 2010 and has a T/R on Fodors' with wonderful pictures. Search for it, if you are interested.
I'm guessing that Les Ambassadeurs is wonderful for brunch. We had a very disappointing lunch there in September. There were 8 women dining and I had to pay a 300 Euro deposit because of the size of our group.

Because there were 8 of us, we had a limited menu, 2 choices each for starter, main and dessert. The service was not the best for a michelin starred restaurant (the restaurant was not full....it was a Wednesday afternoon)and the food was just OK. To top it off, the bill did not reflect our 300 Euro deposit!
We may have just hit them on an off day but have eaten at Plaza Athenee, Le Cinq, Grand Vefour, Taillevent and Pre Catalan among others. They all far surpassed Les Ambassadeurs.
Actually, our favorite dinner that trip was at Hidden Kitchen though I'm not sure they are still serving since they opened their new restaurant, Verjus.

No matter where you choose to dine, you will love Paris during the holidays!”...

      End blog info.

This is a rough in first draft. Check it out and add castles you want to visit and we'll cull others to fit budget...
      Total came to about 515 pounds...at 1.60 conversion rate = 824 AUSD...
And for Euro...935 Euro at 1.30 Conversion rate = 1215 Ausd..= 824  + 1215 = $2039 ...Spot on budget wise, but no room for error, but must allow 10-20% error margin, extras, emergency. So, you'll need an extra 400 to 800AUSD....
No allowances made for car hire and extra Castle entries, in yellow.
      Green is daily costs.

Check out what you need to cull to get where you need to go!
