Day 36...Monday, 28 Feb...Off to the Swiss Mountains...

Remember this is a blog & it updates backwards! Go to the bottom and find the first post if you want to get the gist of this in sequence...

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Left Salzburg at 10am this morning & headed for a week or so in Interlaken, Switzerland, arriving at 7pm.
I had to catch the first train to Munich from Salzburg, then race around & catch another train to Zurich, then change again for a train to Bern, then finally board the train to Interlaken.
It looks pretty awesome, even in the dark!

Mens Bathrooms at Salzburg, YoHo Hostel. Clean as too & even has hair dryers!

It looks nice too in real life. Very small ante rooms to get undressed in, but that's normal in most Hostels.

Latest Gizmos in the showers too.

It was light enough to see up until the final hour...the best part! It looks like we came around a beautiful lake for about 30 mins & then arriving here it looks like there's massive mountains outside my top floor bedroom window, covered in snow.
I'm in a room with a girl who is leaving in the morning.
The bed has a real mattress inner spring & a small (our style) feather pillow! The guy running it is an Aussie from Perth, so I guess he knows what we like anyway!
All the beds so far have been foam mattresses on board bases & that's been Ok.
The pillows are those gigantic European things & the last 2 hostels have had brand new pillows & doonas, so everything crackled, as new stuff does.
No complaints, but now I have a real pillow & a real mattress & this room has an ensuite! Our own shower & loo.
It's a 4 bed dorm, up in the attic tower with a curved staircase leading up & a sloping ceiling inside!
All is good...will talk later.
Hope Peter's birthday went OK yesterday.
Was thinking of you Pete, all day.
First thing I did here was to jump on the WiFi & make sure it worked!
It does, so I'm one happy camper again.

Leaving Munich Station. I nearly missed this train as I got off at another "Munich" stn about 10 k from the HB one. I got off at Hfb...Duh...a train stn is a train stn, isn't it? Anyway some guy raced me to another platform & said to go another 7 stops & get off at HB instead. I had 14 mins to connect trains at Munich & with my mistake I lost 12 mins. Just made it. Otherwise, I'd have forfeited my ticket, as there's no refunds etc on the type of ticket I bought!

I thought these German/Swiss trains were a bit of all right & promptly found out I had stowed away in First Class for 50 miles or so!

Snow all gone. Between Zurich & Bern, out the train window...

This looks like grape vines?

The train went over the bridge to the station & came back again to continue, so I was able to get 2 nice slower shots!

A massive lake at Lindau...It is huge, like an inland sea & goes on for miles & miles.

Looks like the snow has all gone, except in the higher regions now. The grass does not burn off under the snow.

Coming into Zurich, Bern or Munich!...

I was so excited I captured this shot. Even racing by & thru' a train window on a cloudy day, it came out OK!

Most of the older buildings throughout Europe appear to be of similar designs.

Super Fast Swiss Train

Ooooops! I thought it said...Office Works!...Oh well. I arrived in Interlaken at around 7pm.   69Euro for the 9 hr train trip thru the Austrian, German & Swiss countryside from Salzburg, Munich, Zurich, Bern & finally Interlaken. At on stage I was in 3 different countries in a 3 min period on the train a girl told me...great trains, nice people everywhere I go. Off to find the Hostel, which is supposed to be 5 mins walk away.

Day 35...Sunday, 27th Feb...Pete's 40th

Remember this is a blog & it updates backwards! Go to the bottom and find the first post if you want to get the gist of this in sequence...

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

It started snowing today, then it rained...so I thought I'd catch up on my blog & the WiFi wouldn't work for 24 hrs.
It came on again about 5pm today, so mow I am a happy camper again!

Did this following bit in Word to fill in time...so it's probably all over the place...

Went on the Sound of Music Tour around Salzburg & out to the Lakes & Mondsee where the S.O.M. wedding scene was filmed on Friday when I arrived here..
Wow, it was a beautiful day & lucky I went when I did, as the next day I needed to complete some photos that it was too dark to take on the tour & to-day it rained, snowed a bit & was not photo weather!

A bit peed off to-day tho, as I paid for an extra day here because they had WiFi & thought I’d catch up on my video loading & blog entries, but the WiFi is down & I’m not a happy camper at all!
Especially when I paid extra for a better hostel, which charges extra for breakfast, making it over 20 E a night & find a bunch of things wrong with it!
So, I’m going back to the cheaper ones at 10 Euro a night with reliable WiFi & FREE breakfasts!
I was so looking forwards to speaking with Peter on his 40th, but everyone had problems & one girl has to fly back to England as her Gran is seriously ill & she is having to use the internet at the hostel to book flights & train connections back to England. There is a line up, needless to say!

They gave me a free internet hour in lieu to-day & I sent a Face book message to Peter & then one to Sonia, hoping to get to Pete on time. Oh, well...it was not to be.

Remember Sarah, the English girl school teacher I first met in Vienna? Well...guess what?
I was sitting down here in the common room last night, as the dorm WiFi had packed it in, but this one was still Ok, when I heard my name called out.
It was Sarah! It was so fun to run into someone I knew in Europe! We hugged & girlie screamed & danced around like kids.
She is the one with the house in Penzance in England & she invited me to visit it to open it up & air it as she was to be away for 3 months.

Anyways it turns out that she has a full week off the very week I go to that part of England!  So, I’ll be going down there for a night to visit her, needless to say.

The more I tour here, the more I love this mountainy, snowy part of Europe. We went out for brunch this morning & Sarah & I both admitted we could see ourselves living in this city.
It’s has only approx 150,000 people & is so easy to get around in. A cab from one end of town to the other is 7 euro!

Sarah & I having brunch at the Large Cup Cafe!

Check out time...You bring down your sheets before 10 am & get your key deposit back!

Check out time...This Hostel is very busy.

Rescued!

Jason, the Aussie Board rider, who gave me some squirts of Vegemite out of his tube that another Aussie returning home had given him!

A very drunk guy having his Bucks party here!

The Hostel serves a nice menu at 7pm every night. It's very social...

Another Aussie... Benjamin from Brisbane, working in Germany for 7 weeks. He had a W/E in Salzburg. Sarah is just going out of the shot & you can see Jason, my roomie!

Beer is 2 E a glass/container/mug.

Day 34...Sat 26th Feb...

Remember this is a blog & it updates backwards! Go to the bottom and find the first post if you want to get the gist of this in sequence...

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Heading off on a walking tour of the Mirrabelle Gardens & Palace where some of Sound of Music was filmed.
Anyone for nibblies?

Entry to the Mirrabelle Gardens...but look...what is that red in the doorway?

Lo & behold! A wedding in progress. How lucky was I? It looks almost as tho' I planned this shot!

The Gardens from the last shots...nice wedding setting.

Still ice in the fountain. This is where the kids & julie Andrews danced around in Do-Ray.Me...

Kissy Time!

These poor little Panzies withstand the snow...It's still melting on them!

This part of the gardens is roped off for the winter. How scary are those trees!

People sit in the sun on every chair available!

There are seats all along here on left. People filled every seat.

Trimming the trees for summer.

Pretty Buildings in Salzburg...

The fortress, from the Gardens...

Watch that doggy!

OOOPs!...Tree? What tree? I thought you said "pee"

The side of the Mirrabelle Gardens.

Look how they spell Jeweller...

Very active Classical programme here for a small town of only about 150,000 people.

This street is full of banks! These beautiful buildings are mostly banks...

So many locals out strolling in the Winter sunshine. About 3C to-day

Note the people sitting on the rocks (on the beach) in the freezing river bed!

A good shot of the Fortress...

Back again to the back of the Palace & the red wedding party is still in progress...

Sunny enough to sit on the grass with short sleeves.

Wedding party still going!

The Restaurant where I had the Glass of bubbles, after taking pics all afternoon...

OK!

Look at this. It's 3 C & Cafe people are sitting outside in the sun...

I couldn't resist a choc cake made without wheat flour!

...and the obligatory cup of coffee!

I didn't like to suck up his face!

Then his eye disappeared....

The culprit! Check out the size of the cup!

No wonder Grimm's Fairy Tales come from over this way. Look at the help they have to create hobgoblins & trolls!

Not many drunks around here! The trees frighten them sober...

The front (side) entrance to the Hostel in Salzburg.
